Obverse Die: Double Die Obverse (FS-101)

Reverse Die: Normal Die

Stars: 13/34

Notes:  There is so much going on with this coin that it is difficult to know where to start.  It is a nice solid strike with almost all the stars showing on the reverse.  The obverse strike leaves a little to be desired with Lee's leg not being quite full.

But then the coin gets really interesting.  This is an example of the Double Die Obverse certified as the FS-101 coin.  It has the correct doubling at the date and the bottom of a portion of the memorial.  But this one has something extra across Lee's head.  There is a clear indentation and looking at the coin under magnification we believe it was struck through some foreign matter such as a small piece of wire or medal.  There is also clear doubling of the face of Little Sorrel that clearly runs up through the ear.

The reverse of this coin has some minor die cracks around the eagle's head and left wing in areas where we normally see these type cracks.  But on the Right wing there is a die break with the medal offset slightly.
